Hello Parents and Guardians of Herndon Magnet School Students, this is Tom Thomas, Principal of Herndon Magnet School with Herndon Highlights for the week of April 3, 2023.
• I want to thank everyone who came out for “Donuts with Grownups” and the kindergarten kite day this past Friday. It seemed like everyone had a good time.
• Congratulations to 5th grader, Colton Sumrall, and 8th grader, GabrielleMorvan, for being selected as Herndon’s Most Improved Students of the 2022-2023 school year. They will be honored by Red River United and Caddo Parish Schools on Thursday, April 6, at Captain Shreve High School.
• Congratulations to 5th grader, Addison Holstead, and 8th grader, Dean Patillo, for being named Herndon’s overall Kindness Nominees for the 2022-2023 school year.
• Congratulations to 7th grader, Shelby Holt, for qualifying for the 4-H State Competition in rifle shooting.
• Congratulations to Herndon’s Golf Team of Koda Hale, Evelyn Romero, Landry Pharr, and Reese Wynn. These four players always represent Herndon and Coach John Corbell well.
• Congratulations to Herndon’s top four Bunnies & Almonds sellers: Sophia Griffin, Riley Greber, Emani Williams, and Lily Cochran. These ladies will be receiving Walmart gift cards. Every student who participated received a Free Dress Coupon.
• The Herndon Boosterthon, sponsored by the PTSA, kicks off tomorrow, April 3. There will be daily prizes for homerooms with the largest daily participation. There will also be school-wide rewards for meeting the school goal. All money raised will go towards school beautification and a new sound system for the gym and outdoor events. The money raised from last year’s Boosterthon has been set aside for Herndon’s walking track. The plans have been submitted to the Capital Projects Department for the track, and we are waiting for final approval in order to begin construction.
• The HMS Tennis Team will be going to Querbes on Tuesday, April 4, and Thursday, April 6. All players are welcome to attend one or both days.
• The 1st grade will have a field trip to Walter B. Jacob’s Park on Tuesday, April 4.
• On Wednesday, April 5, the HMS Choir will participate in the District VIII Choral Festival.
• The HMS boys’ and girls’ track team will participate in the League II championship meet on Wednesday, April 5, at 5:00 PM. All track meets are at Lee Hedges and tickets must be purchased at locallevelevents.com.
• The Herndon Spring Book Fair started on March 31, and ends on Thursday, April 6.
• The 8th grade will travel to Baton Rouge on Thursday, April 6, for their annual Louisiana History trip.
• Thursday, April 6, is a street clothes day for Herndon students who have not lost that privilege. Please follow the CPSB Dress Code Policy.
• Miles for Smiles will service Herndon students on Thursday, April 6.
• Schools will be closed for Good Friday and Easter on Friday, April 7, and Monday, April 10. Students return on Tuesday, April 11.
• If you, your business, or your church would like to partner with the HMS PTSA to provide lunch, prizes, or help during Herndon Staff Appreciation Week, which is April 17-21, please contact the HMS PTSA at herndonptsa1@gmail.com.
• As mentioned above, the Herndon Boosterthon kicks off tomorrow. As a parent of three former Herndon Hawks, I understand that there are many fundraisers that take place at Herndon that pay for, or offset the costs of, activities, events, programs, sports teams, trips, equipment, etcetera, or to donate to specific causes. I do not want you to feel obligated to participate in every fundraiser. However, please know that fundraisers are the main way we are able to fund and enhance the aforementioned.
