In a momentous occasion, Caddo Parish Public Schools proudly announced its first-ever Purple Star School Distinction, honoring Caddo Parish Magnet High School for its outstanding support of military-connected students and their families.
The Purple Star School Designation recognizes schools that demonstrate a significant commitment to supporting students and families connected to the United States Armed Forces. To earn this recognition, schools must engage in various initiatives, including designating a military liaison, providing training to school staff on military-specific considerations, creating a dedicated webpage for resources and establishing student-led transition programs to support military-connected students.
Joining the celebration were representatives from Barksdale Air Force Base, including 2nd Bomb Wing Commander Col. Michael Maginness, 307th Operations Group Commander Col. Michael Pontius and members of the Military Affairs Council.
“The Purple Star School designation is absolutely huge,” said Col. Maginness. “For many families coming to Barksdale, the schools are the first touch point with their new assignment. Long before Airmen report for duty, they have registered their students for school, clubs, sports, and activities. Schools often are the first impressions of a town and base, and the designation of Purple Star Schools lets our Airmen and families know immediately that they are valued and welcome. I thank Superintendent Burton for his leadership, congratulate Caddo Schools on this huge milestone, and am looking forward to growing our partnership.”
In July, the Caddo Parish School Board unanimously passed a resolution pledging its full support to military families. Since then, campuses across the district have embraced this initiative, culminating in today’s announcement honoring Caddo Parish Magnet High School for its leadership in this critical effort.
“This recognition as a Purple Star School is a proud moment for Caddo Parish and a testament to our commitment to serving all students, including those from military families,” said Superintendent Keith Burton. “We congratulate Caddo Parish Magnet High School for taking the lead in this work to highlight our dedication to creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students navigating the unique challenges of military life. We look forward to seeing other schools earn this distinction.”
